These filaments are formed in magnetic loops that hold relatively cool, dense gas suspended above the surface of the Sun. They appear dark when you look down at them because the gas inside is cool compared to the hot photosphere below. But when we see a filament in profile against the dark sky, it looks like a giant glowing loop. These are referred to as prominences, and they can be spectacular. Huge Magnetic Filament Observed on the Sun’s Surface on July 12, 2022
The Sharjah Optical Observatory team managed to spot a great ionic cloud on the surface of the Sun called magnetic filaments and noticed its increasing solar activity and huge size. The event happened on July 12, 2022, and the 90 mm H-alpha filter was used to take the picture.
