The Next 50 Years Plan - SAASST Starts its Series of General Lectures for the Academic Year 2020/2021

Under the patronage and with the support of His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, General Director of the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST), and President of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, SAASST is starting its series of general lectures for the Academic Year 2020/2021.

These lectures aim to raise the public awareness of space sciences and astronomy and are held on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month to attract enthusiasts, students, and professors in the field of astronomy and space sciences. This is intending to deliver the scientific information in a simplified, easily digestible manner as well as raising awareness of the importance of this field and the latest developments in the UAE Space Sector.

This is following the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah, who founded the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology as a national development project and research center that seeks to serve and educate society in all areas of space science and to be a world leader in space sciences and technology research while establishing the United Arab Emirates as a scientific center in the Arab Gulf region and the world.

In the context of achieving these goals, Dr. Ilias Fernini, Deputy General Director of SAASST for Research Laboratories and Scientific Projects, gave a virtual lecture titled "The Next 50-Years Plan," during which he introduced the attendees to the future aspirations within the next 50-year plan in the space sector of the United Arab Emirates, as well as the role of the Emirate of Sharjah in achieving the goals and vision of this plan. This plan is based on strengthening the higher education sector, the scientific research and development sector, and the space economy sector. In this context, SAASST was nominated to visualize the space plan for the Emirate of Sharjah. The Emirate of Sharjah will have a significant influence on the development of this sector in the upcoming 50 years, as it is the home of education and culture and several leading universities and educational institutions such as the University of Sharjah and SAASST. Dr. Ilias Fernini added that the Academy's vision for the next 50-years plan of the Emirate of Sharjah is to expand the SAASST's facilities and projects, develop the capabilities of launching satellites and building space rockets, work on quantum computing capabilities, and apply artificial intelligence and machine learning in space applications.

Thanks to the continuous support of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, and role of His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, General Director of the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST), SAASST is now one of the most comprehensive academies in the country and the region covering the fields of education and scientific research in space sciences, astronomy and technology while organizing informative workshops, lectures, seminars and conferences that benefit professionals and amateurs in this field alike. During the past two years, SAASST has also published more than 30 research papers and articles in prestigious international journals and is looking for more of these achievements using its various research projects and laboratories. SAASST also adapts to circumstances such as COVID-19 and ensures the continuity of offering services and the scientific material to the community utilizing available means and technologies.
